Botswana Judge Rules in Favor of Female Inheritance

Justice Key Dingake has ruled that three elderly sisters can inherit their father’s property instead of their nephew, who is the oldest surviving male:

“It seems to me that the time has now arisen for the justices of this court to assume the role of the judicial midwife and assist in the birth of a new world struggling to be born. Discrimination against gender has no place in our modern day society.”

Botswana, it seems, has a progressive national government that unfortunately tolerates regressive local laws and customs that run counter to its constitution. That may be about to end.
